LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 6, 2017) – Snow moved out of our area last night but frigid temperatures are in the forecast for the weekend.
The Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention emergency weather plan is in effect. This plan is activated anytime temperatures are expected to be consistently below freezing and relaxes access to emergency shelters. Anyone in need of transportation to a shelter can ride for free on Lextran.
If citizens are worried about someone out in the cold or someone experiencing homelessness, they are encouraged to contact the Compassionate Caravan at (859) 913-0038. Additionally, a list of emergency shelters is available on the city’s website at www.lexingtonky.gov/how-do-i-get-help.
Residents are also reminded that prolonged exposure to dangerous cold temperatures can put pets in danger. “Last night, the Lexington-Fayette Animal Care & Control responded to 15 animal cruelty complaints which were pets left outdoors without proper shelter,” said Officer Tim Brown, public information officer for the LFACC. “If anyone believes they have witnessed the mistreatment or neglect of an animal, they can call (859) 255-9033 ext. 221 and an officer will investigate. Please know that your contact information will be kept confidential.”
City crews continued to work overnight treating all rank 1 and many rank 2 roads in accordance with the city’s snow plan. Staff will continue to work throughout the day alongside contractors. Night crews will report at 8 p.m. and will work a full 12-hour shift.
As of 6 a.m. the Lexington Police Dept. had responded to one injury collision, five non-injury collisions and six motorist assists. “Officers received reports of only a handful of collisions during the Friday morning rush hour, which is a big improvement over yesterday,” said Police spokesperson Brenna Angel. “While primary roads are mainly clear, many residential streets are snow covered, so we still encourage motorists to slow down and drive with caution.”

Citizens can view traffic at major intersection in real time through the city’s traffic cameras at www.lexingtonky.gov/traffic. Citizens are also encouraged to participate in social media discussions by using #LexKySnow on Twitter and Facebook.
